Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health conditions, affecting approximately 20% of adults with moderate to severe symptoms. Research also indicates that women are more likely than men to experience anxiety. Anxiety can present differently for each person, but common symptoms may include:

  • Excessive worry

  • Obsessive or intrusive thoughts

  • Irritability and restlessness

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Panic attacks

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you are not alone. Therapy can help you better understand the underlying factors contributing to your anxiety and develop evidence-based tools to manage symptoms more effectively.

Panic Attacks

Panic attacks involve a sudden escalation of anxiety symptoms and can trigger a strong physical response. Common symptoms may include sweating, hyperventilation, chest tightness, and an increased heart rate. Panic attacks can be intense and frightening, but they are treatable. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a well-supported and effective treatment for panic symptoms, helping individuals understand and reduce the cycle of anxiety and physical arousal.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based form of talk therapy commonly used to treat anxiety and depression. In CBT, the therapist and client work collaboratively to identify and understand the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. By examining these patterns, clients learn practical strategies to shift unhelpful thinking and develop more effective coping skills.

TREATING PTSD WITH EMDR

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a trauma-related condition that can involve persistent anxiety, intrusive memories, and hyperarousal. When symptoms are related to traumatic experiences, an alternative evidence-based treatment such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) may be appropriate. I am certified in EMDR and can integrate this treatment when it aligns with a client’s needs and goals.
